Austerlitz
Paris Rive gauche is a new district of Paris which occupies the part of the 13th arrondissement situated between the railroads of Austerlitz station and the Seine River. The town planning, started with the construction of the’ Bibliothèque Nationale de France’ (National Library of France) in the 1990s, continued with the construction of apartment buildings and offices.
In July 2006, the Simone de Beauvoir pedestrian footbridge connects the esplanade of the’ Bibliothèque Nationale de France’ with the Bercy garden, on the other side of the Seine River. At the same time, the Joséphine-Baker swimming pool, a floating spa, was created on the Seine River, next to the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
The relocation of Paris Diderot University from the campus of Jussieu University towards Paris Rive gauche is in progress and cultural and leisure developments should be established in the bonded warehouses of the Austerlitz port. The district retained the marks of its industrial past: some buildings were kept (Frigos, the SNCF (French National Railway Company) former refrigerated warehouses, the great mills of Paris, the flour market, etc.).
